When you’re looking to go organic, you might not think of your oral care products as something that you should switch. In fact, your oral care routine might be one of the first things you want to change. The chemicals in traditional oral care actually contain chemicals that cause the acid level in your mouth to rise, which only serves to encourage tooth decay. If you’ve been using traditional oral care products your whole life, it can be a little scary and even alarming to know that you’re not only putting chemicals into your mouth, but chemicals that serve to encourage tooth decay. In addition to the chemicals, many traditional oral care products use sugar as an ingredient. Thinking of switching to organic oral care now? There are some ingredients you should be aware of before you just buy any oral care that claims to be organic.
- Aloe Vera. It has healing properties that help to heal wounds in the mouth. In healing sores and gum problems, aloe vera also helps to eliminate bad breath caused from these problems.
- Peppermint is astringent and has antibacterial properties. This helps to stop the production of bacteria that not only causes tooth decay but causes bad breath as well.
- Parsley is a powerful breath freshener.
- Sodium bicarbonate whitens teeth and neutralizes odors.
- Calcium bicarbonate removes plaque and polishes teeth.
The thing it’s important to remember is that these ingredients need to be organic in order to produce a truly organic toothpaste. You can ensure this by checking the packaging for a seal showing that the product is certified organic, meaning that all of the natural ingredients used in the toothpastes are organically grown.
Fluoride may or may not be added as an ingredient in organic oral care products, but by many is seen as a cumulative type of poison. If you’re concerned about having fluoride in your products, you should choose a toothpaste that contains it. Be aware, though, that by adding products such as fluoride to your oral care products, you reduce the naturalness of the products.
It’s always a good idea to talk to your dentist before you start a different oral care program to make sure you’re getting all the necessary ingredients in your oral care routine. Organic or not, it won’t help you if it’s not providing you with the best possible ingredients for your oral care needs. Explain to your dentist that you’re trying to go all organic and you would like to know if the product you’re considering using is going to give your smile the best boost possible or if there is something else your dentist can recommend.
