The Environmental Liberation Front, also known as the Earth Liberation Front, or ELF, is considered to be an eco-terrorism group by many. It is said that this group does more harm than good in their tactics to stop activities that they deem bad for the environment. ELF is under investigation by the FBI for things like burning down homes and buildings that were built on sites that the group thinks should be left undeveloped. There are accusations of drug use and even some more extreme accusations of the group making their own drugs. The Environmental Liberation Front is suspected of burning down things like logging companies and SUV dealerships. The group believes in causing financial havoc with these companies to cause them to either go out of business or change their anti-environmental ways. No one has been killed in these actions and the FBI isn’t certain that ELF is even behind all of these attacks, but all indicators lead to the Environmental Liberation Front.
To give the group credit, however, they truly believe they are doing good for our environment and are really trying to make the Earth a better place for all people to live. The Environmental Liberation Front does not kill people and only rarely targets individual homes; the more productive targets are the businesses. They are considered to be the largest terrorist group in the US by the FBI and are growing in popularity.
The Environmental Liberation Front is based out of Seattle and the current group operating is not the original group. The current group was formed in 1997. The first group disbanded after many members were caught and served as informants to the FBI during the investigation. Many people argue that the downfall of the first group should have served as an eye opener to the new group, but that hasn’t happened. The Environmental Liberation Front of today seems to have adopted the same guerilla tactics as the ELF of yesterday and that scares many legitimate environmentalists and average citizens alike.
True environmentalists argue that arson is a dangerous practice and only serves to release more carbon into the environment. Burning down buildings and lighting up SUV’s only serves to pollute more and make people angry, environmentalists say. The Environmental Liberation Front is only serving to sabotage true environmentalist’s work and make people angry. This causes a backlash against all environmental groups and makes people nervous about all groups working to help the environmental cause.
Perhaps if these eco-terrorists such as the Environmental Liberation Front really wanted to make more of a difference, they should try harder to get rid of their guerilla tactics and focus on educating people and raising money for the research needed to create a truly eco-friendly world. These people should open their eyes and realize that with every act of eco-terrorism, they only serve to push back the progress the efforts of legitimate environmentalist groups are making.
